According to theconversation.com, " First, that people of non-western cultures may come to western medicine holding different beliefs about the causes and treatments of illness from those of scientific medicine, causing a culture clash between doctor and patient" (theconversation.com). Sometimes, a different culture is hard for doctors to help their patients. An example is Hmong people in America. Hmong people believe in a shaman, who has the power to heal any diseases. Hmong people have particular ways to help their epilepsy patients. In the past, the Hmong had a separate way to cure epilepsy, but in the current century the Hmong have had a revolution in their beliefs regarding epilepsy. Hmongs culture appeared in ancient times. They mostly live near the border between China, Vietnam, and Laos. According to hmongculture.net, 1810 - Hmong people cross the borders of China into Northern Laos (hmongculture.net). They live in mountainous areas because they think it will protect them from danger. 1976 - The first wave of Hmong immigrants begin to arrive in the United States (hmongculture.net). Anne Fadiman has a famous book, it is THE SPIRIT CATCHES YOU AND YOU FALL DOWN is a book written by Anne Fadiman. In this book, Anne Fadiman teaches us about the Hmong medical culture in America. The main actor in her story is Lia, who was born in a Hmong family. Lia's was diagnosed with epilepsy when her family took her to a hospital. Her family did not believe in the diagnoses from the doctors and nurses. Her parents thought her disease was from a spirit in her family. They believed they had to invite a good shaman in their village to help her. According to Anne Fadiman, "They recognized the resulting symptoms as qaug dab peg, which means the spirit catches you and you fall down (Fadiman, 20). A doctor at the hospital tried to investigate Lia's disease history. The doctor wrote, The patient is an 8 month, Hmong female, whose family brought her to the emergency room after they had noticed her shaking and not breathing very we ll for a 20-minute period of time (Fadiman, 28). The author also tells us how Lia's parents talked to her doctors with broken English. They had to use another Hmong person, with marginally better English, to translate. This language barrier presented another challenge for her parents to believe the American doctors. Hmong medical culture is different from American medical culture. In the Hmong tradition, every illness is from the soul. Epilepsy is included as an illness of spirit. Western science teaches doctors and nurses to use medicine, but Hmong people use their Shamans to heal their patients. In the Hmong language, they have different words to call epilepsy. According to Anne Fadiman, In Hmong-English dictionaries, qaug dab peg is generally translated as epilepsy (Fadiman, 20). This word is the name of the spirit Hmong people think is the sources. Epilepsy is a famous illness in Hmong village. It is a very serious and potentially dangerous condition. According to Anne Fadiman, Their seizures are thought to be evidence that they have the power to perceive things other people cannot see, as well as facilitating their entry into trances, a prerequisite for their journeys into the realm of the unseen ( Fadiman,21). However, in American culture doctors and nurses have a different idea about this illness. According to medicinenet.com, Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal abnormally causing strange sensations, emotions, and behavior,

The Truman Show Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Truman Show - Movie Review Example In the show, which must keep going in order to sustain its own world, Truman Burbank is the ultimate consumer: nothing about his life is secret to the viewer. He is doing what corporations want to observe people doing: acting naturally and making choices which seem to be those of free will. Going into a large corporate store, it is very easy to fill out surveys. Cameras are everywhere. There are parallels everywhere to the ways that consumers are scrutinized, just as Truman Burbank is scrutinized in ââ¬Å"The Truman Show.â⬠The motivation of the showââ¬â¢s producers is motivated to portray Truman Burbank as an ideal consumer so that the self-sustaining world of supply and demand can continue. The producers are the supply; Truman makes the demands. It is a symbiotic relationship, so the producers want to keep it going. They will stop at nothing to keep Truman from the truth, and this is part of what forms much of the tension in the second part of the movie. Overall, Truman Bu rbank is a typical ideal consumer, because he is the object of constant scrutiny and measurement. To me, the conclusion is the most important part of a short essay such as this one, because it really is the last thing that the reader is going to take away from the process. The conclusion here about the cycle of Trumanââ¬â¢s routine was something that I completely agreed within this response because I also think that corporations are looking for habits and cycles in their consumers, and this is something that made Truman ideal. Analysis Of Ulysses Lord Tennyson English Literature Essay
Analysis Of Ulysses Lord Tennyson English Literature Essay 1) Travelling is a significant symbol throughout the poem and it is clear that Ulysses has travelled for the ten years previous. This can be seen in lines 12-15, where Ulysses informs the reader of the different places he has been with different governments, people, and foods. When he returns home to Ithaca, he realises he needs to keep travelling in order to get the most out of life (Line 6). He compares life as an arch with which the untravelled world gleams through it. He describes where he intends on travelling as beyond the sunset, further illustrating that he wishes to travel places he hasnt been before. Another symbol of this poem is consumption. Ulysses spends his time as king of Ithaca eating and sleeping. He sees his people around him content with eating and sleeping day in day out, referring to them as a savage race and he loses his appetite for food. Ulysses says he will drink / Life to the lees which shows us that he believes that drink will not lead him to getting the most out of life. In line 12, we see his real hunger is for travel and knowledge where he says he has a hungry heart. The symbolism of animals also features in this poem, mainly in regard to the citizens of Ithaca, whom Ulysses refers to as a savage race, rugged, and in need to be subdued. He depicts his people to feed instead of eat and to hoard as if intending to hibernate. Ulysses, however, refuses to end up like them and regards himself as a type of predatory animal who hungers for larger prey, or better things in life, roaming the seas with a hungry heart. 2) In Tennysons poem, aspects of the character of Ulysses and narrative from other sources are adopted. The character of Ulysses was first introduced into literary history by the ancient Greek poet Homer in his works Iliad and Odyssey as the character of Odysseus, the Greek for Ulysses. The character was later used by poets such as Euripides, Horace, Dante, Shakespeare, and Pope. The story of Tennysons poem particularly alludes to the eleventh book of Homers Odyssey, where the prophet Tiresias foretells that Ulysses will return to Ithaca after a difficult voyage, then begin a new, mysterious voyage, and later die a peaceful, unwarlike death that come vaguely from the sea. Tennysons poem ends with Ulysses thinking of going on a new voyage. However, the story of Tennysons Ulysses is far more similar to the character of Ulisse from Dantes Inferno. In the 26th Canto, Ulisse speaks of how he set out with his men for one final journey of exploration to sail beyond the Pillars of Hercules and into the Western Sea. Ulisse was of the opinion that men were not made to live like brutes but to follow virtue and knowledge. Ulisses zeal for adventure, even at the expense of his family, is projected in Ulysses limitless desire for knowledge and travel: And this gray spirit yearning in desire / To follow knowledge like a sinking star, / Beyond the utmost bound of human thought. (3032). Tennysons poem may also allude to Shakespeares Halmet, where the mention of a savage race that hoard, and sleep, and fee, and know not me is echoed in Hamlets soliloquy that states man is no more than a beast if all he does is sleep and eat. Given these literary contexts, it is Dantes Ulisse that fits best with Tennysons Ulysses. This leads to the conclusion that Ulysses entire monologue is probably him remembering a part of his life while in Hell. 3) The poem alludes to only mythical historical events which are discussed in the previous section on the significance of literary texts in Tennysons Ulysses. 4) Ulysses is a seventy-line blank verse dramatic monologue and therefore does not contain a rhyming scheme. In the poem, Ulysses reflects on his situation through a dramatic monologue. He begins by rejecting his unsatisfying life he faces on his return to Ithaca, and then he fondly recalls his heroic past, recognises his son, Telemachus, as a good governor of people, and finally contemplates on plans for another journey. Tennyson uses a quite simple meter by keeping with the standard meter of English poetry of iambic pentameter for most of the poem. An example of which can be seen in line 70: To strive, / to seek, / to find, / and not / to yield. Tennyson also includes different beats to those of iambic pentameter, such as spondees. In line 36, each foot has two stressed syllables in a row: This la-, slow pru, and make mild. Tennyson also uses trochees, as seen in in line 7, Life to, and in line 46 Souls that, where the beats contain a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed syllable. By not using constant iambic pentameter, Tennyson makes the poem more realistic as a dramatic monologue, as somebody actually speaking. Tennyson utilises the assonance, the repetition of vowel sounds, to help establish the mood of the poem, as seen in the lines: Matched with an aged wife, I mete and dole / Unequal laws unto a savage race, / That hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know not me. In these lines, the e sound, which is strongly stressed in the first two lines and becomes a pattern in the latter part of the third, perfectly puts across the speakers dissatisfaction with his life in Ithaca. 5) In taking into account the symbolism, the literary context, and the form of Tennysons Ulysses I have gained a greater insight into the meaning of the poem. In my opinion, the poem captures the thoughts of a well-travelled man who is contemplating on acting on his desire to explore further even though his best years are behind him. We get the sense that after a life of challenging himself through his voyages, he cannot settle into the sedentary life his accomplishments have earned him. His determination to keep exploring and try new things is inspiring. As is his ability to admit he is not suited to the role of ruler over Ithaca and that his son is better suited even though they do things differently. The ending of the poem leaves the reader with an uplifting note of triumph as Ulysses and his crew set off on their final voyage of discovery together.

Analyze the Tension Rising Between the Northern and Southern States Between the Time Period of the 1800-1860ââ¬â¢s Essay
From 1800 to 1860 the relationship between the Northern, and Southern States grew worse and the threat for the formation of 2 cooperate unions was drawing nearer. This change on the relationship can be attributed to industrial development to a fairly large extent, however it should be noted that there are also other factors, which contributed, in large part to this change in the relationship. Industrial development was a factor in the relationship between the Northern and Southern states with regard to the industrial boom in the northern states and the creation of increase tariffs, as well as the big businessmen and bankers in the North and the fact that Northern Industries did not need slavery while Southerners claimed their agriculture society did. Because of the significant increase in industries in the North protective tariffs such as the tariff of 1828 greeted extreme tension between the north and the south. The tariff of 1828 was keyed the term ââ¬Å"the tariff of abominationsâ⬠by many southern because of as extreme rates. This tariff under president Jackson was opposed by V. P Calhoun who wrote the South Carolina exposition and protests, which similarly to the Virginia and Kentucky resolutions under Thomas Jefferson, stated that the federal government did not have the right to set these tariffs and that particular right is reserved for the states; Calhoun was a strong advocate of the states rights. South Carolina threatened to succeed the union with Calhoun saying ââ¬Å" the union next to our liberty most dear.. â⬠in response to Jacksonââ¬â¢s strong statement ââ¬Å" our union it must and shall be preserved. Henry Clay, the great compromiser, comes up with a compromise for the tariff, substantially while South Carolina agrees not to succeed the union. Tariffs such as the tariff of abominations created greater tension between the North and the South; Which cause for the tariffs can to go back to the industrial development in the north. Big businesses and bankers which like wise grew in port because of the industrial development created greater tensions between the north and the south as these bankers where in the north. However it should be noted that the major deserters against the bankers came from the farmers in the West . Although many in the south were against these bankers as well. Especially with the creation of the bank of the united states, initially apart of Alexander Hamiltonââ¬â¢s debt assumption scheme and later apart of Henry Clayââ¬â¢s American System. President Jackson tried to kill the B. U. S by vetoing it even after the Supreme Court declared the B. U. S constitutionally in Mccollugh vs. Maryland, 1819. Jackson believed the B. U. S only favored the rich northerners and because Jackson was an advocator of the common man, he was against it. Southerners can also be seen to go against the Bank as it did little to help them. This issue of the Bank, which can be given the name Bank War, caused the relations between the North and the south to become worse and the industrial development in the North. Also the industrial development further portrayed the lack of need for slavery in the North. Which became a major issue in the relationship between the North and the South as the Southernersââ¬â¢ economy was based on a plantation society, which benefitted from slaves. The Southern economy relied on cotton gin by Eli Whitney, slaves were now being used to produce more and more cotton. Cotton which was used by the industries in the South, such as clothing industries. Because of this difference in the economy with the North being industrial and the South being agricultural. The issue of slavery increased the problems in the relations between the North and the South. However despite the industrial development being a factor in the relationship between the northern and southern states it should be noted that the new territories in the west caused even more issues between the North and the South. Despite that, the relationship between the Northern and Southern States from 1800 to 1860 can be in a large extent because of the factor of industrial development.
